The Use of Paper When Writing on a Computer Some Results from a Survey

When writing on a computer, paper may be used as a complement to the computer screen for planning, text production, and revision. MY STUDIES • Two questionnaire studies among university students on how they wrote a paper for a course • Focusing on how paper was used as a complement to the computer MY RESULTS • About half the students used the outlining function in the word processor • Most students wrote the text directly on the computer • Most students used paper copies for revision In this paper I will present the result of two questionnaire studies among university students at the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, in Stockholm. The main focus of the first one was twofold: to study how paper was used as a complement to the computer and to study how cooperation with a co-author was accomplished. The second study focused on the use of paper.
